Bradford Rusick

Hello and welcome!

I'm a Boston-based Product Designer at America's Test Kitchen. In my current role I drive design decision making for the Wayfinding team. I love working in an agile system, directed by business needs alongside testing and research decision-making. I'm excited by where I've been, but also for what's to come! Please take a look at some of my work here today and let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.

America’s Test Kitchen // ATK AI (Testing)

Research showed that our users reported difficulty finding their desired content. To solve this, I:

  • Worked with MISO (engine provider) to develop the look and feel of ATK’s new AI feature.

  • Research has been underway with a segment of our user base to test for functional aspects such as response time and quality of results.

  • Beyond function, it’s also been important to understand how users feel about this feature

Folded Navigation

The folded navigation was redundant and confusing. To streamline it and make it more modern and flexible, I:

  • Decreased visual noise by tucking content under each appropriate category.

  • Increased the visibility of the search field.

  • Leaned into personalization by adding the users’ name.

This more streamlined design also allowed us to discover ways to drive to app downloads, social channels, and useful information from the footer.

Mobile First Search

Search on the mobile app was not engaged with as often as the desktop experience. When we ran qualitative moderated user testing, half of the participants were overlooking the search icon near the login button. To address this, we:

  • Tested a new design with an exposed search bar and search engagement increased 10%.

  • Removed redundancies in the top nav and folded navigation. Mobile views now align more with patterns seen across the web.

  • Eliminated side scroll on top nav.

Standard Card - Components

It was hypothesized that our “Standard Card” could do a better job of serving our users and being more clear. To solve this problem, I:

  • Reorganized the information so that it was more clear.

  • Made the “Favorites Flag” more prominent which directly led to more user retainment.

  • Ensured that the Standard Card was flexible across all breakpoints including desktop, tablet, mobile, and the app.

  • Adapted it to flex based on our content types (whether something was new, a staff pick, article, review, or video content).

America’s Test Kitchen // Primary Nav

The Primary Nav at America’s Test Kitchen is a place of constant change. This requires almost constant updates based on user needs. Partnering with product and development leads, we ensure that:

  • Each nav menu is crafted based on use, seasons, and holidays.

  • Our users’ values are reflected in the drop downs, and make sure that they’re able to navigate effectively and feel great about the experience.

  • Google Analytics are applied here to tell us what our users are interested in and what we can test in place of less popular categories.

Here's a little bit more about me

I currently live in Georgetown with my wife and our two daughters, Winter and Marion. I'm a transplant from the midwest, and I've made the north shore my home for the past fifteen years. I began designing websites during a tenure at Education First in Boston about 6 years ago. I love biking, running, working on home projects, and traveling to exciting new places with my family.
